Aluminium - why is it in deodorants at all?
Body odour is caused when bacteria break down our sweat. Basically, there are two different products to combat unpleasant body odour: deodorants and antiperspirants. As the name suggests, a deodorant (lat. from "odor" = smell) covers up the unpleasant smell while an antiperspirant (lat. from "transpirare" = to sweat) inhibits the formation of sweat. To reduce the amount of sweat secretion, aluminium salts are mostly used in antiperspirants. They are able to constrict the excretory ducts of the exocrine sweat glands, which reduces the flow of sweat on the surface of the skin.
Deodorants, on the other hand, aim to give a fresh scent and reduce the amount of bacteria in the armpits. This is because underarm odour does not only come from the sweat itself, but rather from the microorganisms that break it down.
Why should I do without aluminium in deodorant if it helps?
Besides the fact that permanently clogged or constricted sweat glands can lead to sweat congestion with skin irritation and itching, the substance group of aluminium salts has long been suspected of having negative effects on fertility, our nervous system and even kidneys and testicles.
